Legacy: Hike at Doeskin Ranch

We will offer two hiking options, a short, easy one and a longer, more difficult one. The easy hike will cover the Pond & Prairie Trail (0.5 miles) & the Creek Trail (0.6). You can do one or both. Part of the Pond & Prairie Trail is paved. The shorter hike will be led by a tour guide from the Friends of Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. A relaxed pace will cover them in 45 minutes to 1 hour. If you want to be a part of this group, you can meet at the Life Church parking lot to carpool or follow someone at 9:15am, with a departure time of 9:30am for the 30 minute drive. If you prefer to go straight to the trail, plan to be there by 10:00am. The more difficult hike will be over the Rim Rock & Indiangrass Trails, which total about 3.5 miles. This can be done in about an hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. There are a couple of sections of this trail that have switchbacks. If you want to be a part of this group, you can meet at the Life Church parking lot to carpool or follow someone at 8:15am, with a departure time of 8:30am for the 30 minute drive. If you prefer to go straight to the trail, plan to be there by 9:00am. Both groups will meet up at the trailhead about 11:00am, then drive 15 minutes to Dahlia’s in Liberty Hill for lunch. Here are a few things to know: There are no water fountains so plan to bring you own. There are vault toilets at the trailhead that are usually very clean. It’s a little early for ticks and chiggers, but you might want some spray around your legs and ankles just in case. Don’t forget sunscreen. A trekking pole or walking stick is useful, especially for the more difficult hike, but not required. Doeskin Ranch is part of the Balcones Canyonland National Wildlife Refuge.
