Sunday
Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week. It is Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem as Savior and King. He came in on a foal, one never ridden before, fulfilling the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9. In ancient Israel, a king would come riding in on a horse if he was coming to make war and conquer, but if the king was riding a donkey, he was coming in peace. In riding a donkey, Jesus was declaring that his reign was one of peace and humility, not of war and violence. The crowd welcomed him, crying “Hosanna” meaning “Save Us”. That was Jesus’ intention, but not in the way that the people thought. They wanted him to save them from their enemies and oppressors. He had an eternal intention.

Matthew 21:1-11

What in your life is driven by your own plans/thoughts and not his?
Do you daily submit to his will?
How can you go to him for guidance today?

Father, we praise you, for you are King. Help us seek You in all that we do. Let us lean into your plan, your truth; not ours. We thank you for the peace that only you can provide, and we pray for those who have not experienced it yet. Let us be a light to them. Let us seek them out and not just wait for them to come to us.
Monday
On Monday, Jesus cleansed the temple. He had found that a place intended for worship had been turned into a den of thieves, lies, and greed. Sacrificial animals were being sold, and money was changing hands, but the intent was not what it was supposed to be. Jesus kicked them out, declaring that His house was meant for worship and prayer. He also knew that, by the end of the week, sacrifices of this kind would no longer be needed. He would be the sacrificial lamb.
Mark 11:12-19
Psalm 95:6
1 Chronicles 16:29
How has my life resembled the temple before the cleansing?
What do I need to give to him?
How can I make my life a life of prayer and worship?

Father, I am sorry for what I have made my life, from constantly turning from you, seeking my own way. Thank you for the sacrifice you made for me. Help me live a life that you have called me to, focused on your love and mercy. Hide me in the shelter of your wings.
Tuesday
Looking back on Sunday, this would have been the day that the Jewish people would have been selecting their lamb that would be sacrificed on Passover. They would take it home on Sunday and for four days, they would inspect it to make sure that it was without blemish. Interesting how Jesus presents himself, the Lamb, to the people of Jerusalem on the same day they would be selecting their sacrifice. Tuesday brings questions, challenges, and “inspections” from the religious leaders as they try to trap him. But through it all, Jesus proves that he is without reproach, without blemish. Through his parables, Jesus rebukes the religious leaders, stating that they are blind guides, righteous on the outside, but inside filled with all sorts of impurity. Even though he was speaking in parables, the religious leaders knew exactly what he was saying to them.
Matthew 21:23 – 24:51
Does my life have two sides? Am I living the way that I have been called?
Do I question God with intent of trying to prove him wrong?
How can I produce fruit for Christ (living a BOLD life)?
Father, I am sorry for not living my life fully aligned with you. I surrender my life and seek to live a life that is on your path. I know that I will fail, and I am so very thankful that you loved me enough to bear the weight of my sin. Father, I strive to live a life that is not just beautiful on the outside but radiating you from the inside out. Continue to work in and through me.
Wednesday
Not much is said about Jesus’ activities on Wednesday. Many think that after the exhausting events of the past few days, Jesus and his disciples rested in Bethany in anticipation of Passover. It was there that Jesus was anointed with expensive perfume.
This is also the day that Judas negotiates his price with the religious leaders to betray Jesus: 30 pieces of silver. In Hebrew culture, this was the same amount of money that a master would be paid if their slave was accidently killed. That is what they deemed that Jesus was worth. Jesus knew what was happening. He knew where Judas was and what he was doing. He knew that the following day would be ending in betrayal. And yet he continued.
Matthew 26:6-16
Matthew 6:19-21
How have I betrayed Jesus in my life (not necessarily for money…. maybe for approval, preferential treatment, comfort, etc.)? How did it feel after?
Is my perspective focused on the eternal or on the fleeting?
How do you respond to those who betray you?

Father, it’s hard. We are weak, but we know that you are strong. Help us stay focused on you. Help us live a life that focuses on our eternal life with you, laying down our worldly perspective. We thank you for the constant example that you gave us while on Earth. Give us the grace to endure our troubles and reveal to us the glory of you kingdom.
Thursday
If you had 24 hours to live, what would you do? Jesus washed feet. Thursday marks the first Lord’s supper, the prayer, a betrayal, the arrest, and another betrayal. In all of this, Jesus humbled himself. First, when washing the feet of his disciples, he performed the duty of a servant. No exactly the posture one would think for the King. He did this knowing that he would be betrayed and denied. He did this while the disciples argued about who was the greatest. He did this to set an example and told his disciples to do likewise, to serve others. Second, He humbled himself to the will of the Father. In the garden, during intense prayer and knowing what was in store, he asked for the cup to pass over him. He asked for another way. But he knew this was the only way and submitted to the coming pain and death.
John 13:1-20
Matthew 26:17 – 75
James 4:10
How have I passed up ways to serve others, thinking that it is beneath me or uncomfortable?
Life is not about glory and fame, but about living in the Father’s will. How can I humble myself in the Lord and follow His example?
Who can I serve today?
Father, we humble ourselves in your presence. Help us learn from your Son’s example, help us do as he has done. The world will know that we are his disciples if we love one another, if we seek to serve and not to be served. Strengthen our hearts and our wills for love and for service.
Good Friday
By 9am on Friday, Jesus had endured the shame of false accusations, condemnation, mockery, beatings, and abandonment. Pilate found no reason to crucify Jesus, but the crowd was adamant. They were willing to release a killer, Barabbas, in order to kill Jesus. He was mocked with a crown of thorns, whipped and beaten, spit on, and made to carry his own cross up the hill of Golgotha. There he was crucified between two criminals. Jesus bore the full weight of humanity’s sins, and so he had to be treated as though He were a sinner. He cried out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” as God judged the sin in him followed by “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit!” The veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom, and the new covenant through Jesus’ blood was brought in. We no longer have a barrier between God and us. We have direct access to the Father through the Son. The joy of Resurrection Sunday would not be possible if there was not the agony of Good Friday.

Matthew 27
Luke 9:23-24
What emotions do you feel when you reflect on not just the crucifixion itself, but the events leading up to it?
What does it look like to model our obedience after Jesus who, in his humanity, willingly took up the cross in submission to his Father’s will?
Reflect on the fact that God the Father wanted a relationship with us to the point that he sacrificed his own Son. He pursued you!
Do we have it in us to carry our own cross, to publicly align ourselves with him no matter what the worldly consequence? Do we have it in us to submit to the Father even if it gets tough?

Thank You Jesus for the Blood – Charity Gayle
Jesus, today we remember the pain and suffering that you endured on the cross for our sake, for our freedom. We thank you for the eternal love that you showed on that cross and we thank you for the new covenant of your blood, granting us direct access to the Father. Help us live our lives in reflection of this grace and mercy that you have shown us and help us stay focused on the true mission that you have given us. Give us the courage, strength, and endurance to take up our cross daily and follow you.
Saturday
All is quiet. The Sabbath had brought rest. Jesus has been laid in the tomb. Fearful of his body being stolen by the disciples, the chief priests and Pharisees urged Pilate to place guards at the tomb. Mary Magdelene and the other Mary had prepared spices to anoint Jesus’ body but ran out of time before the beginning of the Sabbath, and they were not able to go to the tomb. His followers mourned his death, but waited in anticipation for what Jesus had told them would happen. Like a seed planted in the ground, life would spring up soon. Death would lead to life!
Matthew 27: 62-66
Hebrews 11:1
Romans 12:12
How can I find peace and hope during times of waiting and uncertainty?
What does the silence of Holy Saturday teach me about God’s strength?
What does the death of Jesus mean to me personally?
Father, we thank you for the quiet. We know that even when it seems like you are silent, that you are still working. That your plan is in the works, and that your plan is perfect. We rejoice in the fact that we know the end of the story: your victory over death: our redemption. We sit in quiet anticipation of what will come Sunday when we will celebrate the best day ever. Come Lord Jesus, Come.
